Dizziness and balance problems are one of the most common reasons why people visit their doctor. A staggering 50% of all adults will be affected by dizziness at some point in their lifetime and it is the number one reason for doctor visits in people over the age of 65. Dizziness can lead to problems performing activities of daily living and increase risk and fear of falling.

The most common cause of dizziness is a problem with the inner ear called benign paroxysmal positional vertigo – BPPV, for short. BPPV is a type of dizziness that is caused by small crystals in your inner ear that become dislodged from their normal resting position. People with BPPV often get dizzy or feel nauseous when looking up, lying down, bending forward, or rolling in bed.  The cause of BPPV is not known in most cases, but it may also follow head trauma or inner ear infections.

How can Avenue Physiotherapy help? The answer is quite simple – we reposition the crystals and provide a home exercise program to help manage your condition.

Is treatment successful? Extremely successful!  Studies show up to a 95% success rate in treating BPPV in as little as 1 to 3 sessions.

Other causes of dizziness can include head injuries and certain problems with your neurological system, cardiovascular system, and your eyes. Dizziness specific exercise programs can be very helpful in managing and improving these problems.
